Resources — Discount Schedule

Every publisher has a set discount schedule for their products. It may look something like this:

10% to libraries
20% to independent bookstores

To New Independent Customers That Don’t Already Have an Account:
1-9 copies – 25% discount
10-24 – 43% discount
25-99 – 45% discount
100+ – 47% discount

Note: These discounts are off the publisher's suggested retail price. Many large-scale booksellers require deep discounts. For example, Barnes & Noble and Amazon may require 55% off suggested retail price. Discount stores such as Costco request even deeper discounts. The good news however is that many discount stores buy on a nonreturnable basis. Ah, nonreturnable! That word is music to my ears!

If you’re a self-published author and you plan to sell your books direct to resellers, you need to offer the same discount to the same type of store. In other words, if you offer one independent bookstore a discount of 50%, you need to offer all independent stores the same discount rate.
